Part of the reason turmeric is so special is because of the unique, strong yellow color. These yellow pigments are collectively known as curcuminoids. The root is also brimming with essential oils known as tumerones. The curcuminoids and the turmerones work together within the body as powerful antioxidants helping to attack free radicals which can damage and age our bodies. They also stimulate a healthy inflammation response while also enhancing circulation, protecting the brain, rejuvenating the liver and targeting pain.

What is the best way to take turmeric?

There are so many ways to enjoy turmeric! In your food, as supplements, or in tea! And consistency is key for reaping the benefits of this treasured herb. Turmeric has a short “half-life”, which means it doesn’t hang out in the body for very long. Because of this, it is important to take turmeric throughout the day rather than in a small, single dose, so that we can experience a greater benefit of turmeric over a longer period of time. Turmeric is also very poorly absorbed on it’s own. However, when combined with black pepper, the absorption of turmeric increases significantly. 

When you consume turmeric powder with your meals, make sure to add just a bit of black pepper along with it, in your curries, soups, smoothies, or even oatmeal. Adding ¼ teaspoon three times as day with your meals is a wonderful way to include turmeric in your daily diet. As tea, enjoy 2-3 cups throughout the day in combination with other supportive herbs such as ginger, triphala, green tea, or lemon.
