Frequently asked questions

  • Is curcumin the same as turmeric?

Curcumin is the powerful yellow pigment naturally present in the turmeric root that gives it its yellow colour and is responsible for many of its amazing benefits. However, curcumin is only one of around 200 natural bioactive compounds found in turmeric; its essential oils are also vital for its deep earthy and nourishing aroma too.

Interestingly, another name for turmeric, curcuma, is believed to have come from ‘kurkum’, which is the Persian-Arabic word for saffron. In medieval Europe turmeric was known as Indian Saffron, as it was often used as a more affordable substitute. Buddhist monks used to dye their robes a bright yellow using an infusion made from this plant’s roots.

  • What’s you recommended daily dosage of Wholistic Turmeric?

For the super-concentrated Pukka Wholistic Turmeric we recommend a daily dosage of 2 capsules per day which, in comparison with conventional turmeric power, will provide you with 10 times as much curcumin in comparison to the whole power and an astonishing 75% more essential oils such as tumerone. Combining these alongside punchy long pepper enhances absorption and bioavailability for the body ensuring you gain maximum benefit.

  • Can you overdose on turmeric?

We always provide a safe maximum dosage on all Pukka products to ensure that you gain the maximum benefit without any complications. Our Turmeric Gold tea can be enjoyed and drunk freely throughout the day (just be careful not to spill this one on any white clothing…). And, don’t worry, it won’t stain your teeth. However, if you have any concerns or worries we would always suggest you seek the professional advice of a qualified practitioner.

  • Where is Pukka turmeric grown?

Pukka turmeric is grown in Karnataka and Maharashtra, two neighbouring states in the West of India. Many of our turmeric farmers also grow ginger, and in some regions they grow it as an intercrop with tulsi, sugar cane and kapikacchu (Mucuna pruriens, a medicinal legume that climbs up the sugarcane). In India alone, approximately 140,000 hectares of land are used for growing turmeric (that’s an area just smaller than the whole of Greater London).
