Frequently asked questions

  • Does Pukka Aloe Vera contain Aloin?

To make Aloe Vera Juice and Wholistic Aloe Vera we only use the unfiltered gel of the inner leaf, which contains none of the bitter aloin found in the green outer rind. Aloin is only found in the outer leaf, which is not included in our Aloe Vera Juice.

The Aloe Vera Juice we produce is tested for aloin to ensure it meets the requirements in the EU of below 0.1mg/kg.

  • Does Pukka Aloe Vera differ in colour, texture & taste?

Each batch can differ from the next, depending on the amount of rain the area has received. The climate, rainfall and soil conditions have an effect on the plant, which has an effect on the colour and flavour of the juice. As a natural unfiltered product, Pukka Aloe Vera may be cloudy and some sediment may settle at the base of the bottle. This is the result of natural variation and the juice is safe to consume. All our products undergo rigorous quality testing and only those that have passed are made available for you. For more information on Aloe Vera please visit our Pukkapedia.

  • The Aloe Vera juice tastes a bit bitter. Is it ok?

Aloe Vera is famously good for your health and infamously questionable in taste. We think that ours is the best tasting around (and so do so many of our customers) because we only use the inner leaf gel and not the bitter outer rind. But let's face it, it can taste a bit bitter to some people - hopefully you'll persevere! It is a natural product and does slightly vary from batch to batch depending on what time of year it is harvested. For more information on Aloe Vera please visit our Pukkapedia.

  • What is the citric acid used as a preservative in the Aloe Vera derived from?

The citric acid is produced by bacterial fermentation of certified GM-free tapioca starch.

  • What’s the shelf life of Aloe Vera Juice?

Aloe Vera Juice is a fresh product and we go to great lengths to make sure it stays that way. As a result you need to make sure you use it within 3 weeks of opening. For more information about Aloe Vera please visit our Pukkapedia.

  • What maximum temperature is the Aloe Vera exposed to during processing?

The maximum temperature that it is exposed to is 95°C.

  • Does the Aloe Vera Juice contain any latex?

The Aloe Vera is hand filleted and the person filleting the Aloe Vera leaf removes the outer green part of the leaf and latex so there should be no latex present.

  • Does Aloe Vera Juice deplete the body of potassium?

No, Pukka Aloe Vera Juice would not deplete the body of potassium. The potassium issue is related to the laxative effect caused by the yellow aloin-containing latex that is sandwiched between the outer green part of the leaf and the inner gel. Our Aloe Vera is hand filleted and the outer green part of the leaf and latex are removed. The inner gel is the “juice”. Most other Aloe Vera Juices are made from the whole leaf, including the bitter outer rind and latex and then carbon filters are used to remove the latex – this process also removes some of the active constituents in the juice, so although our procedure is more time-consuming and expensive, we believe our juice contains all it should while avoiding the inclusion of potassium leaching latex.
