Herbs for a gentle spring cleanse

The best times of year to undergo a natural cleanse or detox are at the change of the seasons. Just as there are spring floods, with rivers overflowing, there are internal ‘floods’ in the body as the natural increase of heat in spring melts the build-up of congestion from the winter months. While we wash away and eliminate waste daily, modern life throws so much at us that not all of it goes down the plughole. Taking time to do a cleanse will help the body to more effectively get rid of unwanted waste.
A cleanse for the mind too
Feeling clogged up can also affect our emotional state – we might hold onto negative issues (the run-in at work last month, the break-up last year), instead of letting them go. Cleansing on all levels is central to being healthy.
A quick look at a spring cleanse diet
Say yes to: warming, stimulating and slightly spicier foods are great during a cleanse.
Try and avoid: dairy and highly processed fats which are more difficult for the body to digest and breakdown, will also support a more productive cleanse.
What herbs will benefit me during a spring cleanse?
Nettle – a nutritious plant filled with vitamins, minerals and protein. Nettle is great at ridding the body of excess waste, making it the body’s answer to a ‘spring-clean’. Skin conditions and seasonal allergies are helped by this plant, thanks to the way it cleanses the blood.
Fennel – the ultimate way to give yourself a natural digestive detox. With its strong anti-inflammatory properties, it soothes an upset digestive system and clears toxins.
Turmeric – one of the all-time great liver-loving herbs. This renowned super-spice helps your liver work more efficiently and your blood a little cleaner, giving your skin a glow of health.
Lemon – effective in removing toxins from the blood and clearing congestion.
Green tea – an effective way of getting antioxidants to the liver, which desperately needs them.
Dandelion – clears excess heat and toxicity in the liver. Dandelion is a traditional remedy for treating the skin and supporting liver.
Aniseed – a renowned herb for detoxifying, this sweet aromatic seed naturally relaxes and supports digestion.
Spirulina – an algae and complete protein, containing every amino acid (helps to build up cells, muscles and tissue) and is the only non-animal source of vitamin B12.
Chlorella – a great ingredient for a natural detox or cleanse – it’s reputed for alkalising cleansing the blood and boosting immunity.

How does my dosha affect a spring cleanse?
Our constitution informs what our bodies need in order to give us a healthy glow.
Although we are all beautifully unique, there are as many different constitutions as there are people. Ayurveda (India’s ancient health system), divides us into three main constitutional types; vata, pitta and kapha (otherwise known as doshas).

The Vata cleanse
Vata naturally has difficulty holding onto energy and need to be cautious when cleansing. A short cleanse of 1-3 days with simple nourishing foods such as rice and mung-beans will help calm the mind and enkindle the digestive fire without weakening the body.
Herbs that really support the vata constitution are those that will help create a sense of balance and stability, but also nourish the body at a deep level.
