Businesses need to act now to give back to nature

21st March 2016

James Bidwell, CEO of Springwise, a global, crowd-sourced innovation platform, explains why, like Pukka, his company is a fellow member of 1% for the Planet.

It is simple. We have no choice but to act now to protect our planet. Over a 25 year career I have watched how the majority of businesses have exploited our planet for their own purposes with no thought for ever repaying that debt.

Now that I have my own business, Springwise, my team and I have the opportunity to be part of a movement which is effecting genuine change - 1% for the Planet. Not only is 1% for the Planet co-founded by my business hero, Yvon Chouinard of Patagonia, but it has as its CEO one of the world's most inspirational leaders, Kate Williams. The purpose is clear - business needs to give back to nature, and to act now.

1% for the Planet is the perfect organisation to help us do just that in a simple yet efficient way and we are proud to be a part of their work. Every day at Springwise we see innovators from around the world who are also creating ways of solving the environmental issues we face. We also meet wonderful, bright young (and sometimes old)  people who will not work for businesses which destroy our planet (however much they are paid) and who actively want to work for those of us who are members of 1% for the Planet and believe in the giving back to nature as fundamental. That’s innovation. And that’s progress.

Many thanks to Daniel Western for the image.
