Our packaging policy

Never before has it been so important to take action to protect our climate, resources, ecosystems and health.  At Pukka, we nurture healthier, happier lives through powerful organic plants. Our herbal creations are crafted to connect as many people as possible to the beauty and power of nature. We share our knowledge and campaign for a healthier world, always trying to lead by example.

For our packaging this means extending the reach and impact of our herbal creations by using beautiful and sustainable packaging, while encouraging others to do the same. Our vision is a world in which sustainable packaging is the norm and all packaging can be disposed of in a responsible way.

Our Packaging Manifesto (5-10 year vision)

Global goals

  • Only plant-based or circular packaging by 2025

  • No single-use plastic by 2025

  • We will join global efforts to ensure that our packaging is recycled, reused or composted in practice globally by 2025

Where we want to get to

  • Conscious living

We're committed to working with our customers to help reduce waste and promote recycling.

  • Regenerative sourcing

We aim to protect and deliver our herbal creations by only using materials that allow ecosystems to thrive and regenerate.

All our packaging will be resource-efficient, recyclable, reusable or compostable.

  • Responsible design and manufacture

We are working towards a net zero carbon future, where only renewable energy will be used to manufacture our packaging.

We want our packaging to be sourced from plant-based or recycled materials.

We want none of our packaging to end up as waste. We will minimise single-use packaging and ensure we use no single-use plastic.

  • Collaborative partnerships

We will build the strongest, most responsible supplier base in the industry, and share innovations to ensure that everyone has access to the best information on sustainable packaging.

Our commitments

  • All products will carry clear information that encourages recycling and provides clear direction for the customer so that they know how to dispose of it by 2022

  • All packaging (per product unit by weight) to contain a minimum 35% renewable or recycled content by 2021 and 50% by 2025

  • We will reduce the amount of packaging we use

  • We will only use plastic where it is clearly environmentally advantageous*

  • All packaging plant-based or circular by 2025

  • We will join global efforts to ensure that our packaging is recycled, reused or composted in practice globally by 2025

*establishing how we measure this will be covered off in the strategy as a priority

Our progress

  • 100% circular tea packaging. After 4 years of research, 2019 was our first full year using widely recyclable envelopes.

  • 98% of Pukka packaging sold in 2019 was widely recyclable (on average per unit)

  • 94% of Pukka packaging sold in 2019 was made from either renewable or recycled materials (on average, per unit)

  • We have had independent confirmation that our tea bags  can go in your food waste bin

  • In 2019, we reduced the weight of our tea packaging to cut GHG emissions and save 71 tonnes of cardboard.

To find out what action we're taking next, read our priorities on packaging over the next 1-2 years. We've also included a glossary which gives more detail on the terms we use for our packaging and plans.
