Pukkapedia - Fieldmint
Our organic field mint project is based in Uttar Pradesh in Northern India, about 7 hours drive east of Delhi. The farms are located in a famous mint-growing area – the region produces vast quantities of essential oil from peppermint, spearmint and field mint.
Currently the fieldmint tea project consists of 8 farmers with 77 acres of land certified organic. Another 18 farmers and 130 acres are in their final year of conversion to organic status.
Drying the mint requires much more labour than distilling it for oils so is a very good way of creating employment in an area that otherwise has few job opportunities. _x000D_

When we first approached the farmers nobody had ever heard of anyone drying mint leaves as we are doing for the Pukka Three Mint tea. In fact nobody we met had even heard of drinking mint tea! So they were quite surprised when we asked them to boil some mint for us so we could sample the flavour of delicious field mint tea.
The mint crops are good for encouraging organic farming as they have no problems with pests and diseases, and very popular with the farmers because the monkeys don’t eat them,as the whole region is over-run with monkeys._x000D_
